Why Business Listing Updates Take Time to Appear Online

Business listing updates.

Anyone who manages business listings for multiple clients has probably refreshed a map or directory page and waited for an update that’s out there, but is not yet showing up. However, there’s a simple explanation here—submitting new business information is only the first step. The update must still reach each platform, pass its review process, then get matched to the correct listing before it publishes. Here’s how that process actually works.

How Business Listing Updates Reach Online Platforms

When an agency submits data using a listing management service, it starts by entering the listing network. The platforms within the network will each have their own ways of receiving data. Some have direct submission relationships, while others rely on data supplied by third parties.

For platforms that accept direct submissions, the path is simple. Information goes from the listing management platform straight to the directory itself. However, other platforms do not work that way, and for these services, updates pass through a data aggregator, a partner network or another third-party provider before reaching them. While each additional step means it will take longer before arriving at the final destination, realize that additional time does not indicate an issue, it just shows how the platform sources its data.

Data aggregators collect, standardize and distribute business information to other publishers. That’s what allows a single update to eventually reach directories that do not have a direct submission relationship. You can learn more about the role of data aggregators here. Put simply, a directory with a direct connection might receive an update right away, while a platform further down an aggregator or partner route receives that same update later.

Why Business Listing Changes Appear at Different Times

Further differences in listing update times occur when the information is actually received. Directories, search engines, map platforms and navigation systems all run independently of each other.
